OpenAI executive Fidji Simo steps down from role as head of applications
OpenAI head of applications Fidji Simo is stepping down from her full-time role to transition into a part-time advisory position due to health reasons.

1. Executive Departure
Fidji Simo, who served as OpenAI’s No. 2 executive and CEO of Applications, is stepping down from her full-time role. Simo, who joined the company in May 2025, cited a prolonged recovery from a neuroimmune condition as the reason for her transition to a part-time advisory position. Her departure creates a leadership vacancy at a critical time for the company, which is currently preparing for a potential IPO and competing with Anthropic in the enterprise AI market.
2. Leadership and Organizational Changes
Simo’s exit follows a series of recent leadership shifts at OpenAI. Earlier this year, COO Brad Lightcap moved into a "special projects" role, while CMO Kate Rouch and CPO Kevin Weil departed the company. Following Simo’s announcement, CEO Sam Altman expressed gratitude for her contributions and friendship. OpenAI currently maintains a leadership team that includes Altman, Lightcap, CFO Sarah Friar, President Greg Brockman, and Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser. Industry observers suggest that Dresser, a former CEO of Slack, could potentially take on expanded responsibilities following the recent executive turnover.
3. Strategic Context and Market Position
The leadership change coincides with OpenAI’s efforts to accelerate its product development, including the recent launch of the GPT-5.6 model family and an agentic tool called ChatGPT Work. While Simo was primarily tasked with growing the company’s consumer business, OpenAI has faced challenges with cooling growth in ChatGPT and increased competition in coding tools. Additionally, the company has recently adjusted its internal policies, such as eliminating the vesting cliff for new employee equity, as part of an aggressive strategy to retain talent amid an ongoing AI industry competition.
